Five beautiful non-Apple dynamic Wallpapers for macOS

“Kunst liegt im Auge des Betrachters” — What I like must not appeal to you.

See the magic between Sunrise and Noon to Sunset, thanks to some math and its appliance to make your Desktop more vivid. You may ask: what’s the difference between calculating the sun position and plainly using the clock to change Wallpapers? Well, to put it in simple words: during the year, the Sun position is different from day to day and would leave the impression of dark wallpapers even if the sun did not set. For example: during Winter, the Sun goes down already at 3pm, whereas in Summer the Sun may set at 9pm.

That being said, I like that macOS finally gets more fine grain functions to personalise your own Desktop. Sure you can’t do as much as you could do with Classic MacOS — where you could choose from a variety of Windows Frames, Icons for Folders, Sounds, etc. But hey, it’s a beginning.

[macOS Big Sur Onboard Dynamic Wallpapers]

For the last years after Dynamic Wallpapers were released, I occasionally switched on the feature, but mostly switching it off after a couple of weeks again, as the onboard Wallpapers did not really appeal to me — not knowing that there is a community out there generating more great content.

To be fair: with macOS Big Sur Apple delivered some more appealing Dynamic Wallpapers, in my opinion.

Yet I have a wish: Apple, please let us choose Dynamic Wallpapers from our own Folders, without Hacks and display them as what they are: Dynamic. Right now, the Thumbnails do not reflect the type of Wallpaper and you cannot choose the Mode: Dynamic, Light, Dark. Please give us users this feature!

How to set Dynamic Wallpapers on macOS:

Installing your own Dynamic Wallpapers does not work out of the box unfortunately.

Go to System Preferences and select one of Apples dynamic Wallpapers. Make sure to select “Dynamic” from the Menu. Then go to your Folder in Finder where you store your Wallpapers. Now you can right-click on the File, select Services → Set Desktop Picture

You can also choose the Wallpaper from the System Preferences Panel, but then it will probably not work as expected. This seems to be a macOS Bug.

Apps to create your own Dynamic Wallpapers

Note: I have not used any of those, just stumbled across them. May you check them out and let us know.

As already mentioned, you don’t need to have an App installed to create your own Dynamic Wallpapers, Dynamic Wallpapers Club lets you do the same — but online.

Dynaper

19.99$ (4.2 of 5 Stars)

Dynaper seems to be a very powerful App to create your own timed Dynamic Wallpapers which respect the Sun Position, so you can add up to 16 different Photos to plot your day on your Screen. Yet, 19.99$ to remove all Watermarks seems a bit pricy but maybe worth every dime. (I don’t know)

24 Hour Wallpaper

9.99$ (3.7 of 5 Stars)

This App runs on its own Engine and can use up to 36 Images for a day, to create a more smooth experience. It also comes with already 90 5K ready dynamic Wallpapers with a very versatile stock of photo settings.

Wallpaper Wizard 2

9.95$ (No App Store Ratings, not listed on App Store)

Wallpaper Wizard has by far the biggest Gallery with over 25.000 Wallpapers which are already 4K ready, but only a few are Dynamic Wallpapers.
